Obama pardons turkeys, but not without skewering Republicans

It's past time to put the traditional pardoning of the turkey on the chopping block, but at least Barack Obama managed to dish out cold leftovers from the election while doing his presidential duty. This year a Facebook vote decided which bird would be spared and Obama cracked, "Once again, Nate Silver completely nailed it,"  referencing the analyst whose poll science was mocked by Republicans. Even his vanquished opponent, who whined that Obama won the election with "gifts" to voters, got a jab: "In the spirit of the season, I have one more gift to give," the president said, "and it goes to a pair of turkeys." And no, they’re not Romney and Rove. [Source]

Home remedies: Great news for all Chocolate lovers :) Fact or faked?

12 weird health remedies--chocolate chunks

Chocolate eases coughs

Fact or fake? Fact!
When you have a cough, chocolate not only makes the medicine go down easier but it may actually be the medicine. "Chocolate contains theobromine, which acts very effectively as a cough suppressant," says Teitelbaum. Theobromine works by suppressing the firing of the vagus nerve, which is a key feature of a chronic cough, according to a study published in The Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. Since it's found in cocoa beans, theobromine is present in all chocolate products but is higher in dark chocolate, unsweetened baking chocolate and cocoa powder than in milk chocolate. An exact amount of chocolate has yet to be determined, but 2 ounces of dark chocolate for adults and 1 ounce for children may help, says Teitelbaum.

Ladies slicing toes to wear heels in comfort is so hot right now

Why bother finding a pair of shoes that fit your feet when you can just surgically alter your feet to fit your shoes? A "growing number" of women are reportedly having surgery to make their high heels more comfortable, receiving special foot injections, shortening their toes — and in extreme cases — cutting off their pinky toes altogether. "Unless you've been there, and you can't find shoes, and you're in pain, don't judge," said Susan Deming, who recently underwent a toe-shortening procedure on her left foot, which had longer toes than her right. She says going under the knife was a worthy price to pay for better-fitting heels: "I've never felt this good about something I've done. If it's vain, it's vain." [Source]

Top 10 Tips to Make a Mani or Pedi Last !

Let's face it, salon manicures and pedicures look great for about…three days. Then real life gets in the way (as it tends to) and that poor mani/pedi gets scuffed. One wrong move and your gorgeous nails chip, crack, and peel.

I'm no stranger to a chipped mani here (especially a fresh one) or a smudged pedi there. There's really nothing more frustrating than spending what feels like half a day in the salon, only to reach into your purse and snag your nails on the zipper of your wallet. (Ladies, you know what I'm talking about.)

That sort of mishap is fixable at the salon, but what about 30 minutes later when you look down and notice you've chipped the corner of your pinkie nail? That kind of mess you have to clean up at home — by yourself.

Stress not. I have ten easy tips to make your nails last well into next week.

1. Start With a Clean Nail Bed

Whether you're giving yourself a mani/pedi or getting one at a salon, make sure your nails get cleaned properly before you do anything else. (Do not skip this step.) Our nails secrete natural oils, making it harder for nail polish to adhere to the bed.

2. File First

Uneven filing or snags at the end of your nails are invitations for disaster. Make sure your nails are evenly filed, straight across with slightly rounded edges. The "squoval" shape keeps the longest without causing chips.

How to: For tips on pulling off a great at-home pedicure, check out this video.

3. Rinse Between Cleaning and Filing

After filing your nails, wash your hands thoroughly to get rid of any filings or snags. You don't want flecks in your nail polish.

4. Be Sure to Properly Dry Nails

Painting even a slightly wet nail bed can ruin the entire manicure.

5. Use a Base Coat

Skipping the base coat in a manicure is so tempting. Who has the time to wait around for four layers of polish? You do. (If you want the manicure to last.) Using a base coat ensures you have a clean, smooth surface to paint.

6. Apply Two Layers of Color

It's tempting to glop on one thick coat of nail polish color and call it a day. But you'll pay later for skipping out on that second coat when indentations show up to ruin your hard work. Be patient and paint one thin layer of color at a time. Wait two minutes (at least!) between the first and second coat of color so things don't get sticky. (Gross.)

7. Apply a Top Coat

Again, a top coat seems like a step that's easy to skip. Don't be tempted. Your pretty nails need a top coat to seal in the color. The top coat will also take the brunt of the wear and tear on your mani/pedi. Just remember, before you apply, make sure the colored polish is dry.

8. Do Not Touch Anything

This may seem obvious, but many a mani/pedi has met its demise by not following this rule. Not waiting long enough for your polish to dry is the No. 1 mistake most of us make. Sure, we're all in a hurry. But if you don't wait long enough, the whole thing will have been a waste of your time. Fact: Nails need at least 45 minutes to an hour to dry completely. I'm such a big offender, bumping my nails all over the place before they're dry.

9. Treat Nicks Immediately

Whether you're two hours or two days out from your manicure or pedicure, fill a nick or scratch immediately with nail polish in the same color family. This will prevent the problem from getting worse.

10. Continue to Reapply the Top Coat

Keep a top coat handy — in your car, at your desk, or on your nightstand. Be sure to apply a thin layer every few days to keep your nails strong and protected.

All these steps may seem like a lot of work, but it's worth it in the end. A mani/pedi can last a couple of weeks if you take care of your nails along the way. No shortcuts! Shop Now !

Beauty Tips : 4 Ways to Wear 1 Lipstick

Bold, bright lipsticks are all the rage, but not always appropriate for every occasion. Here are four ways to wear a bold, highly-pigmented lipstick, ranging from very sheer to dramatic.

Step-by-Step:

1. Wear lipstick as a stain: Using your ring finger, dab the lipstick and lightly apply to your lips with your finger. Be sure to press the lipstick into the natural wrinkles of the lips, ensuring a nice, sheer stain.

2. Use lipstick as a cheek stain: Apply lipstick to the back of the hand. Using your finger, rub the lipstick on the hand to warm it up and then sparingly apply to the apples of the cheeks. Use another finger to blend upwards and outwards. Keep it sheer!

3. A classic lip: Using a lip brush ensures that every bit of the lip is covered evenly. To create a more intense look, apply a matching lip liner around the natural line of the lip after lipstick application.

4. Glossy color: For the most drama, apply a gloss to create high shine on the lips. Use a clear gloss or a coordinating gloss to make your vibrant lips super shiny!

Tip: If you don't want to shell out the big bucks for a super bright lipstick, drugstores have great versions!

How to Be Fun, Have Fun, and Stay Young :)

Tip of the Day from RealAge
Feel like your life has done a number on your fun factor? You're not alone. Deadlines, bills, and crazy-busy schedules keep most of us from cutting loose and getting silly. All work and no play isn't just dull. It negates something that's hardwired into the human psyche, say "play experts." So we're giving you an assignment: Carve out some time for playtime. Find something that makes you feel like you're floating free, happy, and totally absorbed in your own play land.
Here are some ways that a busy grown-up can cut loose, play, and even learn something new along the way.
  • Find your inner artist. Haul out your water-color set, old sewing machine, or woodworking tools. Feeling musical? Dust off your old clarinet, take a guitar class, or join a band. As long as you're having a good time with no high-pressure expectations, it's play. (Find other ways to look young and stay sharp.)
  • Flex your green thumb. Gardening doesn't just produce beautiful flowers and produce, it can also be a relaxing way to get your daily dose of exercise in a stress-free way. Once the ground thaws, make a pact to plan and plant a plot this year. Learn other simple ways to be more active.
  • Turn your workout into play. Haven't found a physical activity that you dig? Don't give up. Be brave in your search. Consider outside-the box activities, such as roller skating, salsa, or hula hoop, or join a sports league at work or in your community. Kickball, anyone? Find out how a video game can help you get fit and have fun.
  • Learn a new language. The ability to chat in Thai, Greek, or Arabic is good for more than ordering coffee abroad. Learning a new language as an adult or picking up where 10th grade Spanish left off exercises your brain cells in ways that guard against memory loss and fuzzy thinking. Play one of these online games to boost your brainpower.

Tapping into your spontaneous, inner-child packs big benefits for your health, mood, mind, and job, as well as relationships. A recent study shows it eases job strain, connects you with others, and makes you laugh. So what are you waiting for? It's fun time!
